Expedition Zukunft – Science Express

In April 2009 the 300-metre long exhibition train “Expedition Zukunft” started its journey – to mark the 60-year anniversary of the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany. Twelve theme railcars demonstrate the path-breaking trends in the different areas; the line-up ranges from nanotechnology to the energy supplies of the future and personalized medicine. This new type of mobile exhibition is intended to illustrate the way science and research will be changing our lives in the coming ten to fifteen years, and campaigns for more curiosity and openness to new technologies and innovations in Germany.

The exhibition is sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The exhibition train is being organized by the Max Planck Society with the participation of universities, major research organisations and private enterprises.

Exhibition design

On their journey visitors wander through twelve theme railcars describing future scenarios. The differing theme-related design of the railcars will make the scenarios tangible for the visitor. The exhibition design takes up the themes in an associative and emotional manner and creates spaces that are sure to fascinate with their atmosphere and liveliness. Visitors can find out about futuristic research topics on interactive exhibits and media installations. The exhibits are presented at different levels of complexity, so that even children of primary school age can embark a journey of discovery in the Future Express.
